BENICIA -- In front of a warm crowd inside City Hall, Mayor Elizabeth Patterson was officially sworn in Tuesday night for her second term in office.
Patterson was able to keep her job by narrowly defeating rival City Councilman Alan Schwartzman by 236 votes on Nov. 8. There were 4,827 ballots cast.
The mayor listed several goals for the next four years, including diversifying the city's economic base beyond the Valero Benicia Refinery and recruiting more women and people of color to serve on boards and commissions.
Patterson also said she'd like to get the ball rolling on a possible performing arts center and rebuild trust with city employees who've endured wage and benefit cuts during the past three years.
Councilman Tom Campbell, who is starting his third term, and council newcomer Christina Strawbridge also took the oath of office Tuesday. Robert Langston and Lisa Wolfe were sworn in as city treasurer and city clerk, respectively.
The elected officials also thanked one-term Councilman Mike Ioaki-medes for his service. Ioakimedes, who did not seek re-election, was presented with a commemorative paperweight and his peers peppered him with kind remarks.
