A man who fatally shot himself during an overnight standoff in North Berkeley was identified by the Alameda County coroner's officeWednesday as 58-year-old Owen Davis.
The incident began about 7:30 p.m. Monday when police responded to reports of gunfire at 1828 Marin Ave., police said.
The first officer on scene heard two shots. Soon afterward, a resident across the street called to report that a bullet had struck the home, authorities said. No one was injured.
The Berkeley and Oakland police SWAT teams were called, and neighbors were evacuated.
Police negotiators spoke with the man over the next several hours. At one point, they heard a single gunshot. At 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, officers entered the home and found Davis dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Davis was a conga player who performed regularly at Plymouth United Church of Christ in Oakland.
